Senior R&D Engineer
We’re building a new generation of endoscopes, designed to make minimally invasive procedures safer, faster, and more precise. Our technology helps surgeons access challenging anatomy and perform treatments with greater stability and control.
As an EPFL spin-off, we are a fast-growing medical device startup developing breakthrough endoscopy solutions and preparing our first products for regulatory approval. This is a great opportunity for people who enjoy working in a high-potential startup environment, where you can have a direct impact on the product and grow with the company.
About the Role
This R&D Engineer role focuses on developing and optimizing our core product, the medical endoscopy system, with a strong emphasis on mechanical design, CAD, prototyping, testing, and hardware integration. You will be responsible for the design and development of the endoscope shaft, including the integration of actuation, chip-on-the-tip camera modules, light sources, and data transmission to ensure high-quality real-time visualization for surgeons.
You will work closely with the core engineering team. You will report directly to the CTO and collaborate with both hardware and software teams to deliver a seamless and high-performance user experience.
You will play a key role in advancing the performance of Dexterous Endoscopes systems, contributing directly to how surgeons interact with and trust our technology in the operating room. This role is suited for engineers who enjoy working at the intersection of hardware, manufacturing, and software, solving complex integration problems, and taking ownership of critical system components.
Working in an early-stage medical technology startup requires initiative, resilience, and a willingness to build and refine systems from the ground up. If you are motivated by the opportunity to push the limits of medical device performance and help deliver cutting-edge endoscopy technology into clinical practice, this role offers that chance.
Responsibilities
- Design, prototype and iterate single-use endoscope subsystems: distal tip, steering and deflection mechanism, shaft and working channel
- Integrate camera and LED modules and optimize image and illumination performance at the distal tip
- Design and characterize irrigation and suction performance, including flow calculations and bench testing
- Build test rigs and run mechanical and functional verification tests (deflection, torque, stiffness, fatigue, flow, leak)
- Work with contract manufacturers and component suppliers on part design, sourcing and assembly processes
- Write design documentation, test protocols and reports for the design history file
- Support bench, cadaver and preclinical studies with clinical partners
Required Knowledge and Experience
- MSc or PhD in mechanical engineering, microengineering, biomedical engineering or similar
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in medical device or precision mechanical product development
- Strong mechanical design skills (CAD, tolerancing, material selection) and fast prototyping (3D printing, machining, assembly of small parts)
- Strong understanding of mechanisms and kinematics, ideally tendon-driven or flexible systems
- Solid grounding in fluid mechanics (laminar flow, pressure drop in small lumens, pump and suction sizing) with hands-on experience running flow bench tests with pressure and flow sensors
- Fluent in English (C1)
Preferred
- Strong experience with endoscopes, catheters or other minimally invasive devices
- Full understanding of ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and IEC 60601-1
- Basic electronics and scripting skills (e.g. Python or MATLAB) for test automation and data analysis
Application Process
